Look into his eye .....

An amazing philosophical expression on the face of a Mehndied Goat, captured by my friend Slogan Murugan, in the Deonar area of Mumbai,  where the government abattoir functions.

While people play politics over meat bans,  selling bans , a goat's life is a pointless life.   It has been  herded on land , fed, and then herded again in vehicles, and lugged to places where it is killed, or fattened for a celebratory kill.

In a world of animals, there is no UN, no EU and no world making noises about refugees, herding and killing.

And life, and death, goes on .....

They travel in groups
herded by some
across hills

and meadows,
sometimes barked at
by a Boss Dog.

Sometimes,
in diesel contraptions,
in crowds
trying to look out
of a rope maze
designed to keep them
in a herd mentality.

So many come
to look them over,
some paint them,
and some apply tikkas;
last wishes
before going to their death.

No one calls them refugees,
No one calls them hostages;
For a civilization
that shouts from the rooftops
about terrorism, war, hostages, EU,
and the like,
we are such fakes.

Chained Life Melodies

My friend Pearl from Minneapolis , recently posted a sample of a square crocheted by her , possibly on a cool Fall afternoon. Not everyone can crochet, it needs patience, and a lot of attention to chains.  It is good for the joints in your fingers, at a time when the joints tend to be willful and possibly prefer tapping keyboards instead..

Her display of the wonderful crocheted square in place of a cerebral cortex got me thinking.

About whether the yarn  (like us) remembers how it got there (cotton bolls to yarn) ,  what it is doing, and what it feels about itself.  Philosophical types can replace "yarn" with "self" ....

It is
at the end of the Day
about

raw flying amorphous thoughts
by the millions,
collected,
cleaned,
baled out,
compacted,
and packed
trying to bring some order
into a crowded mind.

Then enlightenment
in the process
of spinning a yarn of life,
on a bobbin of age.

Some loom automatically,
some weave slowly
on looms by hand,
but some
chain memories together
with little things
that keep them hooked,
and keep
going in and out
creating designs
that would have made
the old thoughts say,
"Gee, I never thought I could be so beautiful!"

Bozo and Bappa !

Yes. Bozo Amembal , Mumbai's iconic blogger dog, is back ! On the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi and the celebrations .

This has been a restful time for him.  Anxiety about the influence of a certain Desert Storme in the life of Deepak , his mentor and chronicler, used to worry him , and made him lose sleep at times.  And then DS  went away with Deepak into the Himalayas.

One day, she fell along with Deepak at the side of the road while he tried to avoid a lumbering vehicle, and Deepak hurt his ankle badly.

Bozo is just happy , that Deepak flew back to Mumbai without her.  Everyone is home for Ganpati, the ankle is being treated , and as someone called Pippa used to say in a poem, All's right with the world !

Just a few of Bozo's thoughts as he takes a short nap, thinking about Modaks...

Sometimes,
one feels so relieved
that a stretch
on a cool floor
turns into
a small quiet nap.

The influence
of Desert Stormes
in someone life
cannot be denied,
She
of the pale gold makeup
accelerating exhaustive life,
and the impossible urge
to always
runaway with Deepak somewhere.

But this time,
it was Ganpati Bappa,
who helped Deepak,
when he sprained his ankle
while travelling with Her,
and helped him
fly home
safe and sound.

The Desert Storme
got herself all bandaged
and bubble wrapped
in fashionable colors
and landed in Mumbai by road
since the airlines
refused .

They dont carry selfish bikes.

Even the doctor knows.

He has
restricted Deepak
from going out with her.

And just one more thing
while I grab a shuteye....

Yay! Ganpati Bappa Morya !

Vashi Yatra....

My friend Anjali Koli, writes a wonderful blog called AnnaParabramha  .

She recently visited the Mejwani Maharashtrian Thali Festival at Four Points by Sheraton at Vashi Navi Mumbai, , curated by Saee Koranne-Khandekar, and posted a detailed review on her blog. Go read it !

In the early days of the Mejwani festival  I had posted a poem called Mejwani Times , describing the food.

The festival gets over today, the 15th of September 2015.

Perhaps, it is in the fitness of things, to post a poem on what the plantain leaf must be thinking after having come on this amazing Vashi Yatra.

Like the "Kashi" variety, something aspired to by  everyone, and attempted with great reverence , and sometimes, a sense of gentle foreboding....

Totally smitten in
brilliant grainy company,
steeped in the
sibling care
of the
Potato and Waal guardians,
she immerses herself
in imaginary tubs
of fragrant Tomato saar.
A never ending entertainment
of teen Drumsticks
playing peekaboo in the daal,
and some hefty brinjals,
with amazing masala makeup,
making an spicy entry
and giving her
a licking smart autograph

A short interval,
cracking conversations with
crisp koshimbir girls,
and golden bhajjiya lads,
and then a final
sip and spooning
of the Nectar of Ghavle
down a parched spicy throat.

She gulps it down,
licking the last
milk of human kindness,
as the Masale Bhat
awaits
a final getting together
with a farewell touch.

The plantain leaf
has just enjoyed
 a successful Vashi Yatra.

She remembers it all,
satiated,
and sighs deeply,
resigning herself
to a dignified end of life
saying,
"Only the lucky
go away,
with such a sweet satisfying
end to their life ....!
"

Lord of the Glides.....

My  friend Nandan Tavanandi, recently posted this amazing capture of a Brahminy Kite  on a sunny morning somewhere in Goa, and what came through was the amazing posture, look, and sense of power exuded by the bird.

The dignified gliding,  sharp eyes, and general tendency to be away from proletarian slogging fluttering birds suggested a character of a "Khot";  a typical name given to a Kokan (of which Goa is a part)  landowner,  de-facto head , and powerful personality  who employs folks to till his lands for him, pays them in kind with fruits of the land, and quietly assumes leader properties.

First thought of in Marathi.  Certain words in Marathi have no counterpart in English. But like the proletarian folks, one tries and slogs on , in English.....

Wrapped in
a freshly washed sundried
worship habit,
offering prayers to the Sun,
and anointing the earth
with blessings of Dew
from its perch on the Palm,
the Brahminy Kite,
now ready to glide
around its kingdom
far and wide
surveying properties and lands
being "worked".

Meanwhile,
the unfortunate
slogging occupancy tenants
rush with their
mind luggage,
fighting crowds
as they hang in
and  rhythmically rock
in electric trains
on their way to
a daily  thankless slog

Somewhere above
a tranquil flowing Mandovi
the gliding Brahminy Kite
has just
finished a survey
of its verdant lands....

The First Front

It is fairly usual  in households for mothers to perform makeovers of dinner dishes and convert them to yummy breakfasts the next day.

My friend Mukta Atrey just converted a moong dal khichadi, twelve hours old, to a fresh yummy hot thalipeeth, and posted the photograph, just before imbibing it.

In an age when we keep on getting disillusioned by so many purporting to be progressive leaders , perhaps this  thalipeeth has some lessons for all ?

I swear this has nothing to do with the Bihar elections or Third Fronts.

If anything, these are the First Front!

(photo and eating by Mukta Atrey)

ह्या सर्वांशी झालेली तवा भेट;

 Posh looks
with Ghee-Cumin makeup,
a thoughtful getting together
with kadhipatta hing fashions,
and a
khichadi
who just had a makeover
thanks
to a brilliant steaming
and blooming
in a electoral vessel.

Yet sometimes,
a quiet time in the fridge,
after confiscation
of a unusually large deposit.

And then it is time,
for
a coming together
of the
Teary Onion Conference,
Kothimbir Mirchi Mahila Aghadi,
Indian DhaniyaJeera Sanngh,
Ajwain Vikas Party,
and the Progressive Besan Party,
now ably led by Mukta,
that has fought for
the
Independence of Thalipeeths,
for the last 50 years;
all of them on the same
Tawa podium
waving to the hungry crowds.

Breadiwaal, of the Aam Pav Party
rubbishing them all,
saying,
"Sab Mile  Jule Hai ...."
and
a flat ladle ,
turning the thalipeeth
onto a plate
saying,
"So what ! Unity is strength !"....

Sometimes
there is much to learn from breakfasts....

Srrr ke piyo .....

There is tea, and there is Tea.

Hi Fi stuff in monogrammed cups and airconditioned polite sipping at A$4.50 , and open air wildly performing agitating cup-crackling  cutting tea at A$0.20.

What's with the A$?    My friend,  Just a girl from Amchi Mumbai, normally subject to the former, was recently subjected to the latter,  and posted about this , mentioning the prices and environment, a kind of Perth Vs Mumbai stuff.

As she says , " The madness in India is fuelled by endless cups of sickeningly sweet milky chai which is served in small glasses only 3/4 full, giving it the name "Cutting Chai". Every corner in India has a Chaiwala who will fuel your chai needs till you are satiated. While a cup of small coffee in Perth costs around $4.50, chai in India costs less then 10 Rs which is around 20 cents (Maths has never been my forte, so don't judge me). Laced with different masalas Chai gives us the boost to face the day and all the challenges that it may bring."

There are different kinds
of Perils of Plenty...

Plenty of money,
plenty of rules,
plenty of organized brewing
of fixed bags of tea,
plenty of mugs
with plenty of monograms,
covered by plenty
of paper napkins,
as you dunk
a biggish cookie
into plenty of tea
avoiding plenty of slurps
at A$4.50.

And then
there is
plenty of folks
rushing to fewer jobs,
amidst plenty of crowds,
and plenty of roadside teas
boiling in come hither style,
agitating with gingers and cardamom
in plenty of milk,
sweetened with plenty
of sugar, hopes, and wishes,
served in brave
small plastic glasses,
three fourths full,
holding on
with plenty of bravado.

Clearly,
the tea
is a great survivor,
having survived falls
from great heights;
and yes,
it has plenty of admirers
as you hear
the plenty of "Srrr"
as plenty gulp it down
with plenty of cheer...

Mejwani Times ..."मेजवानीचे दिवस "....

There is a lot said about a photo speaking a thousand words. But sometimes, a photograph explodes into an orchestra of thousands of amazing tastes and memories.

My friend, food consultant, blogger, and curator of "cuisines traditionale" (that's me trying to be french) , Saee Koranne-Khandekar , recently  created, curated and managed the Mejwani Thali Festival at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Navi Mumbai, highlighting Traditional Maharashtrian Vegetarian Meals,  as eaten in typical homes.

My friend Sudha Ganpati of Navi Mumbai attended this, and posted this wonderful photograph, listing out the entire menu, and her unbridled delight at being able to enjoy such a wonderful meal .  I e-tasted it all, and had to post her photo of the thali.  Thank you, Sudha !

Like I said, I was not there, but the photo said many things.  Most of them were in Marathi, and I just put them down here as a poem ....

**** Now edited to add an English version too !

(Those who want to rush to Navi Mumbai, remember,  this Mejwani Vegetarian festival is on till September 15, 2015, 7.30-11 pm, at Four points by Sheraton, Vashi, Navi Mumbai. )

बटाट्याची भाजी ;

पातळ भाजीत रममाण अळू ची पाने;

टोमटोचे सार;

वांग-कांदा भजी लोक ;

A deep green young
plantain leaf,
traveling with hordes,
across the creek,
apprehensive about the
"seeing" session at  Sheratonbhau's,
and she is so relieved
on feeling
a reassuring pat on the back
from Saee....

Her guardian elder brother
Potato,
braving skirmishes in steam
and falling to pieces,
only to be anointed by
a golden ghee amidst showers of
kadhipatta, mirchi et al....

The finely chopped
big hearted collocassia leaves,
generously sharing themselves
with peanuts, daal, besan
tamarind and jaggery folks,
in a benevolent display
of Sarva Padarth Samabhav...

And then the
Kokan immigrant Vaals,
a bit touchy in the new world,
mixing a bit hesitantly
at first,
but then quite willingly
with the onions, mirchis,
garlic and kokum chaps
hanging around,
feeling more easy
on seeing the coconut around.

And then Sheraton Bro,
ecstatic after tasting
a Tomato Saar alongside,
with coconut milk memories
amidst tangy ginger, pepper
and stuff....

And what can you say
about thousands of hand rolled
whole wheat minipastas,
lovingly called Ghavle
by Grandmas of the State,
all out in the world, to make a life
amidst celebratory Kheers
adorned with
Sheratony Doodh Masala types.

There were still
the Moong Cucumber girls,
coolly moisturized by lemon,
and the slightly more rowdy
and brown
Dadagiri prone
Brinjal Onion Bhajji Heroes.

She watches
all of them
completely over-awed
and a bit apprehensive,
when she notices
the measured arrival
of Sir Masale Bhat
and Lady Poori.

She smiles,
confident that
all will be well.

Sheraton Bhau is ecstatic,
that everything went off so well;

Away to one side,
an indulgent grandma
of the cook-curator,
is simply wordless
with pride,
eyes full,
as she shares it all
with family.

They simply don't notice,
a little girl,
take off with a katori of kheer,
as she finds a
place
to sit undisturbed,
and lap up
that wonderful preparation of Love....

Khamang....

Make My Blog WIN for BlogAdda Awards

Our country is so rich in numerous languages and colloquial phrases, and not all of these are translatable.

And so , it was a challenge when a friend  from  a group called Rediscovering  Traditional Maharashtrian Cuisine (of which I am a member)  asked about the meaning of a typical Marathi word to describe certain foods after they are cooked. The word was "Khamang" (see below) , and the word has different meanings and connotations depending on what you are cooking.

Most Marathi speaking folks already know what it means. The friend who asked is a culinary expert, gardener, food photographer, mountain trekker, food consultant,  botanist, antioxidant researcher, traditionalist regarding food, is from Delhi and does not understand the Marathi.

So I wrote this for her......

Khamang
It's the crackle of the senses.

So many dishes
participating in the
2015 FB Maharashtrian Food Fashion Saptaha

The mustard and jeera crackling
in hot ,
sometimes smoky oil,
and throwing up whoops of joy
at the arrival of hing,
as the red chillies fall in
inspiring the veggies to
blush and color
and do a lejhim
as they create a stir in the patela;

Sometimes it's besan,
besotted with the onions and garlic,
mindlessly changing color
sashaying back and forth on the tawa,
excited by the Pithla minute,
waiting for the showstopper water
to come and sizzle..

And the Poli,
kowtowing to the Rolling Pin,
bashful in some flour,
as she gets patted here and there,
folded, rolled and
then a trial by heat
as she takes a deep breath,
moves around a bit,
a bit angry here and there,
and suddenly its time
to let go,
as she gives a final bloom,
several kala tikkas in tow,
and exhales
in the hands that rolled her
and still comfort her
with toop fingers.

And all through this,
Grandma Dahi
unconcerned with new fangled fashion
sits
quietly like all grandmas do,
to bring her special touch
wherever needed...

Its all about heat,
inside the food,
across the food,
complementing the food,
tickling the tongue,
delighting the eyes,
feeling the crunch of the food,
as they take a final walk
across the ramp...
