The Contemplations of Bozo ...

Mumbai's first Blogger Dog, Bozo Amembal, is back , after a longish layover.  Old age does that to you sometimes. It is not that he was unwell, but he was just enjoying himself in peace, doing nothing important.

He is aware of the happenings in the country. He listens to people talk at home. He even reads the paper , by leaning over someone, putting his front feet on the sofa back. He watches TV, and sometimes he simply turns away his head, because what he is seeing is nothing new.

He tends to be a thinker in his old age; and sometimes he disapproves of what he sees, day-in and day out, currently, on TV.

His mentor and chronicler of his Life and Times, Deepak , caught him in one of his contemplative moods.....

So much to think and mull over.

I too love my treats,
I love to hide
and hoard them,
and enjoy them openly over a
period of time;
Occasionally someone in the house
will find them,
and notice
that much of the stuff has been chewed away
that they are now useless,
and throw them away.

I always think about it.

Whether
I should be hiding anything at all.

I certainly don't shout
and bark about it,
and go complaining endlessly
in the living room.

I also don't bark and
drown Deepak's words
when he tries explaining to me.

I suppose
Lassie of Carter Road
and my younger friends
don't think that way
and keep fighting
just to win.

In my old age,
I observe things around me
a lot,
including television;
and I certainly
learn a lot
about what NOT to be and do..

As these bipeds say.
"I am like that only...."

In praise of Ginger

It is perhaps a sign of advancing years , that one starts appreciating the foundations (as it were)  of Indian cuisine, studded with "blue chip" members like Amla (Indian gooseberry) and Ginger, to name just a few.  The post previous to this was in praise of Amla , which lends itself physically to numerous avatars. Not to be outdone, this one is about Ginger.

My friend Preeti Deo, who lives in London, and has all the traditional Indian tools-of-the-trade operational in her kitchen, also has a food blogs  called  ISingCakes and More   and  Ruchira Videshini  posted this very simple and yummy recipe of ginger chutney, with ginger, cumin, salt and sugar,  personally ground by her on a traditional chutney stone (yes, in London) , which transforms into a sensational red on adding lemon juice.

This is a paen to Lady Ginger, who has been bestowed with such amazing properties.  The earlier paen was dedicated to Amla .

First in the King's (Shivaji's) language, and then in the Queens's ....!

(photographed by Preeti Deo)

आणि अचानक शेजारी जिर्याची कुजबुज ;

Lady Ginger

The Family Tree
lists Zingyberaceae as the Root,
India as her land of birth,
and Turmeric, Cardamom and Galagal
as close relatives..

Working unflaggingly
since time immemorial towards,
clearing indigestion,
reducing internal inflamation,
stopping morning sickness,
and nausea post surgery and chemotherapy,
soothing muscle pain,
reducing athritic pain,
lowering fasting blood sugars,
relieving menstrual pain,
fighting blood cholesterol
and memory issues as in Alzheimers,
she gives of herself,
non-stop in healing mode.

She is so popular in the Life kitchens,
a childhood bosom pal
of the Chillies-coriander-garlic-lemon gang,
finding her comfort zone in teas,
and in her candy avatar
on cold winter mornings
clutching warm tea cups.

As is her wont,
a social gallivanting
on a traditional Chutney stone,
a sudden awareness that Cumin has arrived,
And salt and sugar itching to join.
A comprehensive grinding
and
romancing the Chutney Stone
by Lady Preeti in the Queen's Land,
followed by a residence in delicate bone China.

Excited, she looks around,
and suddenly gets as if annointed,
by drops of lemon juice,
as she opens her heart to it.
She doesnt realize,
but she is blushing a warm bright red,
at the lovely gesture.

A wish fufilling divine root,
a life, now having reached new heights......
on the kitchen counter ...

आचंबित ;

चक्क तिखट मिठात बसून रडतात ;

बटाट्याचा कापानने दाखवलेले कृती ;
अशी पानाफुलांची परिस्थिती ;

HRH Lady Bhat

People are always posting what may be called "smart answers" on facebook. One such that was posted by a friend , which intrigued me, was as below .

"Dont let anyone treat you like Upma, You are a Biryani .!"

I know Upmas, and certainly, Biryani.  One is a very conservative preparation of Cream of Wheat/Rice (Rawa), not usually  spicy, but  very delicious and nutritious .  The other , Biryani, can range from one which is very finely flavoured with spices , to something with spices that shine through the rice, overpowering the veggies contained in the preparation.

Very clearly, calling people Upma and Biryani , raises many questions.  One claims a connection with the South (of India) , and the other , an affiliation to the North (of India) ,  although Hyderabad in the South does stand out as a Biryani loyalist.

This calls for a lesson in Rice.  Unadorned Rice, called Bhat, and its personality . Observed across families, across meals, particularly in Central India, and Maharashtra.

As for allowing anyone to call you names,  you should be honored to be called just Bhat.....

Lady Bhaat,
Supreme Commander of Biryanees,
Protector of the Realm of Meals,
Countess of Pressure-Cookers,
Consort of Risottos,
Princess of Taats,
Defender of Pulavs,
Colonel-in-Chief of The Metkut Guards,
is actually a simple soul.
She mixes when she has to,
with heavy spicy subjects,
and vegetables
like, at the Masala Garden Parties,
as she alternates
meeting with simple and masala types.

Occasionally,
plays second fiddle to
the Dowager Milk Queen-Mother,
Commander of the Order of Kheer,
but always insists on
Almond and Pista ladies-in-waiting.

But she really comes into her own,
when faced
with a golden pouring ghee,
a spray of lemon and salt,
and the arrival of Lord Waran,
with his pickles-in-waiting.

Perhaps,
also when Deep in confabulation
with a cool Dahi ,
aided by
a sizzling show of strength
bu Mustard kadhipatta types.

Occasionally ,
as is her wont,
trying to be democratic,
and mixing with her sweet
saffron, coconut, sugar and jaggery subjects
on special royal occasions.

They say her children,
Prince Biryani and Prince Upma
next in Line ,
may rule
when she abdicates.

But they probably don't know that
A Bhat, an Ambemohore to boot,
simply never abdicates....

What a Good Earth !

My friend Amit Amembal, maintains a veritable garden in his balcony , and often posts photographs of brilliant blossoms and flowers and cactus arrangements . He recently posted this photograph .

"What is so special?" you may ask .

What is special is that we are now celebrating the festival of  Navratri .  One of the older rituals associated with this festival is the sowing of "Navdhanya" or nine pulses on the first day , and celebrating their  sprouting  every day , as the different shoots come out .   The Navdhanyas are also associated with worshipping the nine planets , with each grain associated with a particular planet.

This photograph is a very evocative image of growth , diversity , and nurturing.

And clearly , has a message ....

Fluttering baby greens
umbilically
connected to Mother Earth,
imbibing every
nutritious, virtuous, kind gene,
the ability to co-exist
with green children of other mothers,
all powered
by a brilliant morning sun.

When will we learn ?

Ms Kakdi Dhondas-Tausali : a biography

My friend Shakti Salgaonkar-Yezdani  had the good fortune to eat a native traditional Malwani dish called Dhondas in Kokan.  A sweet dish prepared from  cucumber, rice rawa, jaggery  and coconut, all available in plenty in the coastal areas, , she had this dish, steamed and then lightly shallow fried in home made ghee.

She posted this photograph possibly just before devouring the goodies.

It falls to us proletarian folks, to simply look at photos,  salivate, and hope that there is some Dhondas in our future.

In the meanwhile, turns out that this dish is also called Tausali in Goa. Never mind. For those who might want to know the antecedents of Ms Kakdi Dhondas-Tausali , here goes :

Skeletal Petitions .....

My friend Dr Nutsure Satwik posted this .  A  classic example of how different people perceive a given visual differently.

He wanted to convey that this pose was a classic pose of someone waiting for an answer . And that , at the end of life, this was all that remained , the exact weight of a person , plus , as he says about 500 gms of carbon element.  Everything else, the ego, the power et al, simply evaporates into nothingness .

Not being a medical person, my immediate impression was about how young the person was, how bare everything was , and how despite it all , there was a sense of unanswered questions that the skeleton had.  The skeleton had an expression , if such a thing is possible, and the words just poured out of my keyboard.

Perhaps it was Nirbhaya and Delhi, and the thought process happened in Hindi...

Guavas For Peace

My friend Braja Sorenson , of Mayapur, Bengal, recently posted  these photos of guava sellers .

Two fellows,  across 7 years and about  2000 kms apart.  The one of the left, selling guavas in Kolkata , in 2009 , and the one on the right , in Udipi, in the South, in 2016.

If guavas were in fashion,  this would have won a prize from some ad authority.

She clicked both these photos !

United in their  brilliantly perceptive  shirt colors,  dedicated to guavas ,  all unknown to each other , they stand, as a shining example , of the peace loving ordinary person ,  despite their tendency to cut and add masalas in the guavas.

But there is a deeper meaning.

In a world,
where
the crookedest
and powerful
wear
a pristine white
across the land;

in a world were
black
is forced on those
who must prove their faith
from head to toe;

in a world where
saffron and green ,
red white and blue ,
are not just colors
but allegiances,
and reasons for clashes;

do celebrate this
Brotherhood of Guava Sellers.

At the end of the Day,
we get to eat the delicious guavas,
and no one even asks
if the popular guavas

 are communal or secular.

National Guavas For Peace.

Fashion : Dumb and Dumber

Came across this photograph of one of our celebrities , doesnt matter who, emerging from a lunch at some kind of posh place in Bandra.

What boggled the mind is the extent to which anything passes of as fashion today, so long as some show business type in the west does it and you ape it.

We have such wonderful fabrics, and varieties of traditional and modern outfits worn in wonderful ways.  And this is clearly a slap on the face.

Perhaps as a friend  mentioned,  "Trying to empathise with those who can't afford to wear clothes which are not torn . That's in thing today -"

Odd way to show empathy.  If cut properly, you can make 2 kids pants out of these jeans.  Just saying ...

In fact if I were the kid in the foto, a few years later I would be mortified to see this.   But wait. Perhaps , there will be a kids version of torn , shredded pants..."

Stupid me.

At one point
progress was all about
intense effort,
endless perspiration,
affording one meal-a-day,
studying by candlelight,
owning just 2 pairs of clothes,
washing them at night,
mending and darning them,
and then one day,
finishing your education,
learning values,
and coming up in the world .

Today,
it is about ,
deliberately cutting good clothes,
creating spots on them,
wearing them with torn pieces
hanging down ,
eating in posh places
paying the equivalence
of someones weekly food expense,
for a proletarian Vada Pao,
and when someone says ,
in Mumabi Train lingo,
"Jara Sarkun Ghenaar ka ?" **
they answer,
"OOOOH! Is that the new wine ? "...

Very clearly,
someone's cortex
appears to be overflowing
with torn and shredded neurons
ripping at the synapse. .

**"Jara 'Sarkun' Ghenaar ka ?" Literally translated as "Will you have a bit of Sarkun?", but is actually a typical phrase used by those who travel in Mumbai's supercrowded suburban trains, and end up asking folks sitting in a 3 seater bench, to move a little and create marginal space for a fourth person; anything to rest a tired body ..."Can you shift a bit ?"

Udta Batman.....

It is a  truth, universally acknowledged, that constantly running with handlewala wooden pieces between 22 yards, might inculcate , in the concerned sports persons,  a desperate urge to break out and run miles, fling javelins,  shoot targets,  kick balls, heave hefty balls with bare hands, leap over hurdles, wrestle with sledging opponents, and perhaps do somersaults over bars instead of on the green.

Perhaps, in this photograph below ,  our Cricket Capt.  Kool ,  is trying to send a message.

(I always thought there was too much cricket going on , anyway......)

They leap,
They tumble,
They run,
They jump
They dive,
They crash,
They slide,
They swing,
They fling,
They spin
(though not themselves)...

Perhaps it indicates
an inborn desire
to Olympisize.

Here is a javelin throw
by someone
considered Captain Cool .

And the red cherry,
hanging around near the
stumps,
nudges the bails ,
and says ,
"Aiiyo ! Udtaa "Bat"man dekh"!

The willow ,
with that stiff upper lip,
weeps.

A "Jaata" goes to London

While most of us today consider readymade flours as a sign of development , and some visit chakkis where the flour gets heated under heavy duty grinding, there are some like my friend Preeti Deo,  who realize how there is an optimum ideal speed at which grains which are being ground, give their nutritional best .

Most of us have seen these grinding wheel sets (called  जातं) in our houses in our childhood.  Preeti just got one made especially for her, of a size easy to transport in a bag, across the seas. It isn't easy. (Ask me. I didn't fly, but lugged a huge chutney stone belonging to my mother's kitchen, in a shoulder bag, by train from Pune, and thence by a crowded Central Railway second class local train. Years ago. )

It takes a lot of will,  scheduling abilities , and  belief in traditional methods to do all this.   Preeti has a lot of that, and here's wishing her the very best of fulkas, bhakris, modaks, thalipeeths , dhirdees , etc  !

Sometimes , it also results in verse.

PC : Preeti Deo

 Tory grains of wheat,
(the farmers are the Labour Party),
straining at the edge
of a bag,
to emerge and rush in;
A bossy Chana Daal
bullying the
Jowar and Rice grains
and forcing them
to come in a queue;
and
then the proletarian millets,
Barnyard, Finger and Amaranth,
patiently waiting
their turn
on a kitchen shelf.

For the first time,
in the world,
a "Jaata" Stone Grinder Wheel,
after its Coronation,
with a Taki Crown,
making its way to the UK,
with the Lady-in-Waiting,
Lady Preeti.

An official Danda,
joins them,
for use at Heathrow
if needed.

Thousands of moons ago,
those travelling thus
had to perform penance
to atone for their
travel .

Today ,
they simply perform miracles
like Metkut,Bhaajani, and Kuleeth Peeth ....

Lord of the Churnings and Flutes....

My friend Shilpa Karkare , lives in a 200 year old house , in the midst of the wild Kokan greens at Tural , near Sangamaeshwar, close to Ratnagiri. The house has been carefully preserved and lived in , and she is currently putting up photos of original household implements and utensils , used by her ancestors.  She calls this the "Old is Gold"  display.

The homestead is also home to Rustic Holidays Homestays, which welcomes visitors to come and experience Life in Kokan, with local community participation, traditional foods and customs.

The picture below is of a traditional buttermilk churning system, where a rope system, is alternately pulled by a person, and it churns the Mathni (big wooden ravi/churner) within a big earthenware pot that contains a rich dahi . The kitchen platforms of old, were below knee level.  I have seen such in my childhood, before the advent of waist level platforms, ergonomic analysis, modular kitchens and mixers/blenders.

While we only hear the electric whirling speed noises today, the music of the churning takes one back to a gentle sound of a Flute playing somewhere.

Where ? Read on .....

Some say
that
when the monsoon wind
wanders wild
through the Kokan Forest Greens,
one can hear
the Music of the Flute.

And then,
in a wide corner
of an old Kokan kitchen,
a rich fat-filled dahi
sitting complacent
in a rotund earthy matkaa ,
a pure wooden churner,
a slim but tough MathNee ,
shyly loitering at its mouth ,
hesitating,
only to have a
a flexiwrapping rope
wrap herself around her
several times
saying
" Go ahead, go in,
I am here to help ...."

And then
the preordained meeting
of the Dahi and MathNee,
a tumultuous explosion
as they churn in joy;
the lady of the house,
pulls the ropes  and adds water
to help them along.

The newborn butter,
floating to the surface,
as Dahi blesses it,
wishing the Lady buttermilk Godspeed
as she makes her way
to a life of
Kadhi, Dhirda, Ukad and Matthaa.

A quiet cupping of dainty palms,
a heartfelt invite
to come home,
and the Butter rests outside
in a porcelain bowl
after a tiring birth.

The Fluteplaying Lord,
pervading across the Universe,
disdainfully notices
the electric churners,
the steel,
the aluminum,
the plastic,
and takes a deep breath
before getting back
to his Kokan Forest Greens.

The Gopis are not there,
but Shilpa is ;
and he smiles,
and puts the flute to his lips.

Like some say,
when the monsoon wind
wanders wild
through the Kokan Forest Greens,
one can hear
the Music of the Flute.

A Masala Unity

Ever prepared three different stuffed veggies in a single unified dish ?  NO ?  My friend Shruti Nargundkar of Melbourne, actually did this, put a picture, gave clues via a Marathi short poem, and challenged  folks to guess what veggies had participated.

The clue :

While scores of ladies went ballistic guessing the stuff over a couple of hours, turns out that the answer was, green tomato,  bitter gourd(karela) , and snake gourd (padwal).

Naturally, one looked for a lesson in all this . Then i found it, first in Marathi, and then in English.

 Some rotund, hefty and fat,
some shapely, but a bit thorny
and
some long, dull and spineless.

Disinterested glances,
they sat like politicians,
scheming
yet ,ignoring each other
in a refrigerator shelf.

Enter Mrs Nargundkar, the Speaker Ma'am.

Then a bariatric surgery
of the innards
of the green tomato;
a daring rescue
of the seeds of the bitter gourd;
and,
ignoring the pleas,
a scraping and clearing
the plaque
inside the snake gourd.

She puts them all together,
the rescued stuff,
and decides to teach a lesson
with besan, onions,
roasted groundnut and sesame powders,
with some
ginger, garlic, chilly, turmeric,
coriander, cumin
and salt footnotes.
The in a generous mood,
a treat of fresh coconut and jaggery.

The three,
the tomato and gourd cousins,
enamoured of the stuff,
like typical politicians,
rushed to appropriate it
and stuffed themselves
to the gills,
cooking together happily
in the country pan,
arriving in unity
on to the plate .

Our Bharat Ratna pair
of Bhakri Rao and Pithlin Bai
had been waiting
with great anticipation,
and understanding.

They knew,
you can't separate
the politicians from the voters.

Who knows ?
Next time a brinjal may get elected ....

Bhakri Ballads for a Rainy Day

My friend Saee Koranne-Khandekar recently posted a photograph of an "infused Jowar Bhakri";  which is like a  jowar bhakri  made from jowar dough  which is spiced up and revelling in its garlic, chilles, fenugreek and ajwain additions. Patted/rolled/cooked and blooming on a blue flame, there is nothing better than this with a dollop of butter and a bowl of dahi, on a Mumbai monsoon morning.

Saee has recently authored and published a book , "Crumbs ! Bread Stories and recipes for the Indian Kitchen", which contains  exhaustive information and recipes , on Indian "breads" , (like bhakris/thalipeeth et al )  besides what  we may call western breads.  All this, complete with memory narratives that take you right into childhoods and the family kitchen.

As she says in her post "PS: Recipes and tips for the perfect Bhakri and lots of such variations (and a chapter on my grandmother's childhood memories of the Bhakri in my book, Crumbs!"

A bunch of enthused ladies augmented her post with their own ideas of enhancing the original Jowar Bhakri.  I happened to mention recycling a Baingan Bharta within a Bhakri, and then someone mentioned the Ghatotkach Bhakri.

Just reminded me of something.

Hot, Green and Rocking !

My friend Vandana Koranne of Toronto,  who runs the Indian Family Garden page on Facebook,  and Instagram , recently posted a photo of a selection of hot peppers and not so hot peppers (capsicum mirchis ) , from her own garden,  and asked folks  to suggest pickle recipes.

While images of stuffed fried hot mirchi bhajjias  , folks eating these raw as a salad etc,  immediately floated by ,  one had to think of the elderly capsicums.  And I listened ....

And guess what, they were speaking in Marathi .  And then by and by , in English.

(To see some great pictures of her garden produce, check out https://www.facebook.com/Indian-Family-Garden-543853252440986/photos )

फार फार तर बेसन आले ;

Two amazingly young looking
grandma capsicum peppers,
and a bevy
of slender,
with it,
fair and lovely
and dark and beautiful
hot chilly peppers.

The older lament.

"A life of potatoes,
besan and leftover rice,
we remain unchanged,
rotund and hollow.

But girls,
forget your differences ,
and come together,
as you enjoy
salt and fenugreek facials,
and welcome
cracked mustard yellow chaps
by immersing them in lemon juice
and getting them high.

Join them
as you spray yourself
with the latest
mustard asafoetida perfume
and then
watch the
Dahi Bhat admirers line up !"

Having said this,
the portly capsicums depart.

To spend their remaining life
with Senor Pizza .....

भाजी मंडळाचे आजीव सदस्य;

आणि हलक्या हाताने तिला समजावतात ;
"आपण फक्त आपलं काम करत राहायचं;

लाटणे आजींचा सत्कार;

घोळक्याघोळक्यांनी टोपलीत विराजतात ;

The Whistler Decides.....

My friend Nutsure Satwik  must be living in a birders paradise, given the wonderful bird photos that he often posts.  This one, of the Whistling Thrush,  otherwise known to scientific types as as Myophonus Caeruleus.

These birds are known for their human like whistling sounds  at dawn and dusk, and they are found in the Himalayas, the subcontinent,  as well as South East Asia.

While one may gather other details from Wikipedia,  what intrigued me was the expression on the face of the bird.   An expression of wondering about things around it, worry, and a determination to do something , given some new laws passed by our powers-that-be allowing establishments to be open 24 x 7.

What ?  Read on ...

Myophonus Caeruleus,
habituated to whistling
before light at dawn
and
after light at dusk,
much after a
a smashed escargot meal
studded with earthworms.

Times have changed
and it wonders
how it will now sense
dusk and dawn,
now that
everything will work,
bright lights on,
24 x 7,
as per our new laws.

Never mind.

Deep thinking
and shocked observations,
has led to the decision
of becoming
instead,
a full time whistle blower. ?

Ants, Buffets and Humans

My friend, Nutsure Satwik, a doctor, recently clicked and posted this amazing photograph of a plant overrun by termites, and an ant delightedly rummaging around, enjoying the unexpected feast , an unlimited buffet.

While none of us would even go near such a plant out of sheer disgust, and fear of inadvertantly spreading the infestation/infection,   it is understandable that a person concerned with health afflictions of humans, might notice  the same in plants, go near it to investigate, and be surprised by the ant.

Clicking a predator ant, trying to make the most of someone else's misfortune , shouldn't surprise us.

We do it all the time ...

In the Ages
of Riots, Looting
and Feasting ,
Intellectually and Physically
on the Fallen,
this one
is doing nothing different.

Thoughtlessly hyperactive
thanks to all that
sugar imbibed
as a habit,
its peripheral neuropathy
blinds it to the termite dirt.

Carried over
to another plant
and the evil spreads.

Why crib and blame the ant ?

That's how things
spread in our biped society too.....

A Transient Sandgi Mirchi Life....

My FB friend Padma Anagol , of Pune , decided to have " soul satisfying  comfort food" for lunch, and what could be better than  Waran Bhat, ghee, salt, and a piece of lemon,  with a fried sandgi mirchi  giving the final spicy crunchy touch ?

Its possible that that a lemon pickle and/or poha papad  were sulking somewhere, but  the day belonged to the Sandgi Mirchi.

What really made it wonderful, was the composition of this photo, or "Plating" as they call it in professional food and cooking circles.

Gave the Bhat, Waran and Sandgi Mirchi  a story to tell. Or, maybe a poem ?

The original in the King's (Shivaji Maharaj's ) language, and then a version in the Queen's (Elizabeth II's) ......

brown is lovely म्हणत

A carefree fragrant rice
steamed to perfection,
a golden Waran,***
concerned about
putting color
into a hitherto colorless life,
and some ghee,
lemon and salt types
making tentative overtures
while searching for something.

And away to one side,
on a kitchen shelf,
a Sandgi Mirchi**** lass
ensconced in a glass jar,
sitting cheek by jowl
with other sandgis,
thinking about her life.

The Lord hears,
and the jar is opened
and she faces her toughest exam;
The Hot Oil Dip.
She dives into the boiling oil,
stiffens herself,
and wonders at her transformation
to a slim brown diva,
"Brown and Lovely!"
she says
as she is escorted out,
amidst yum fragrances,
and left amidst the rice
only to see
the ghee
simply melting in excitement.

Queen for a moment,
and a minute later
she lies amidst the rice
in a tasty harakiri.

Waran Bhat.
Everyday fare.
But the Sandgi Mirchi
will remain in their mind
for years to come...

*** Waran :Marathi for plain dal.

Me, Thalipeeth !

My FB friend Shilpa Karkare  who lives at Tural, near Ratnagiri,  in Kokan   (on the western coast, south of Mumbai) , recently posted a photograph on the makings of a "Thalipeeth"  ( a traditional savoury dry pancake made from a combination of ground roasted grains, onions, chillies, coriander and sometimes even methi (fenugreek leaves).

Shilpa runs an organization called Rustic Arts, and the Rustic Holidays Homestay, at Tural , Ratnagiri.  Needless to stay , all the yummy traditional food there is cooked on firewood in her kitchen.

A Thalipeeth made on a non stick teflon pan on a gas flame, on the 12th floor of a metro city highrise is not a patch on the thalipeeth made  on a  "chool" powered by firewood, cooking slow , watched by the particles of fire rising up , as a fresh butter lump lies waiting in the freshly churned buttermilk in a cool corner of the room.

Naturally,  one wondered what the thalipeeth must have thought.

I found out. Once in Marathi, then in English.

 And Bhajani Bai,
much adorned with onions and greens
comes to rest
on a hot griddle.

Something different ?

Usually,
the griddle is singing hot,
but without
the brilliant flashes of a
wild flame;
a slight whiff on natural gas ,
and a suspicious look
from a milk,
peering through the accumulated cream ,
on the burner alongside.

Today,
the fragrance of the firewood,
memories of the Mother tree,
flying flame particles ,
from a blowing through a pipe,
the thalipith glowing
in the light of an approving flame,
and the grains of the bhajani
revelling in their memories
of childhood
in the fields.....

The big comforting blob
of homemade butter
understands ,
as it slides across
the thalipeeth face.

And Bhajani Bai, now Lady Thalipeeth,
surreptitiously looks
for a hot Mirchi Thecha
before going forth
in a plate
to face a
very hungry young man....
